Buddy Friends

E-mail Print PDF

Pictured are a group of our Senior boys participating in the " Buddy Reading" scheme.Every Friday, this group gathers to read various books of interest to their younger buddies. They then engage in oral questionning and discussion to ensure the younger boys have understood the storyline and content. The boys use various strategies , such as Echo reading,to help with reading new words and promote reading fluency.

Buddy Reading is a fun sociable way to develop an interest in reading and an enjoyment of books.Communication skills, peer relations and self esteem levels are also developed. As a result all the children involved benefit in many positive ways.

Christmas Shoebox Appeal

E-mail Print PDF

Over the past 12 years Irish children have sent gift-filled shoeboxes to over two million  needy children all over Eastern Europe and Africa.

Here in St. Brigid's we are proud to be associated with such a worthy cause.Once again, the boys (and parents), have been busy over the past few weeks filling their shoeboxes with all kinds of treats for impoverished and needy children.

Maths Week 2011

Maths Week 2011

October 15th -23rd

Maths Week 2011 proved to be a great success in St Brigids. This year classes from Second to Sixth took part in the Manga High Maths Challenge - a Maths activity and game based programme for primary and secondary schools throughout Ireand. The challenge for each boy was to gain as many points for himself in order to attain as many Gold,Silver and Bronze medals for himself initially and for his school.Maths activities were both entertaining and challenging and catered impressively for individual difference.

After a hectic weeks activity I received the followinge-mail  :

" Dear Mr Leahy,

I am writing to congratulate the students at St. Brigid's BNS, Foxrock on their fantastic performance in the Mangahigh Maths Week Ireland Challenge 2011.Your school earned a total of 3,003 finishing 5th on the Maths Week Ireland Leaderboard. There were over 500 schools that registered for the competition this year, which puts your students' impressive achievement into context.

The following students performed particulary well and in recognition of their success I have attached certificates that I hope you will be able to present to them :

Eric Wang, Eanmonn Flannery, Ronan Cullen, Cormac McCabe, Conor Austin.

Yours sincerely,

Marcus du Sautoy

Professor of Mathematics

University of Oxford."

Our photograph shows the five boys having received their Certificates at a recent assembly in the school.
